Newcastle upon Tyne rises steeply from the north bank of its river, and the map captures that relationship in a single glance. Here the Tyne runs through a deep valley, and within a short stretch it is crossed by a series of bridges, from the Tyne Bridge and the double-deck High Level Bridge to the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Each shows as a thin line pulling the two banks together.
Above the Quayside, the old lanes give way to Grainger Town, the nineteenth-century centre built by Richard Grainger, with its streets converging on Grey's Monument. Further north, the broad open space of the Town Moor interrupts the street pattern, and St James' Park sits at the edge of the centre. Beyond these, terraced suburbs spread east and west along the river.
A Newcastle upon Tyne map poster suits a city whose identity is tied to engineering and the river. Printed in black and white, the bridges become a rhythm of crossings and the curve of the Tyne cuts a strong line across the frame. The Town Moor leaves a wide blank field, which makes the dense centre stand out even more.

The planned centre around Grey Street and Grey's Monument shows a clear, formal geometry of streets meeting at angles, distinct from the tangled older lanes descending to the Quayside.
North of the centre lies the Town Moor, a large open common where freemen still hold grazing rights, forming a wide empty shape amid the surrounding streets.

Geordies living away, graduates of the city's universities and anyone who has crossed the Tyne Bridge on a cold morning will recognise this map immediately. It is a portrait of a city built on a river gorge, and the bridges tell much of its story.
