Niles is a village pressed against the northwest side of Chicago, and from above it looks like a continuation of the city's grid, interrupted by a few decisive lines. Milwaukee Avenue slices through on its long diagonal, Golf Road and Touhy Avenue mark east–west axes, and blocks of single-family houses fill the spaces between with the steady repetition typical of postwar suburbs.
On the village's eastern side, the North Branch of the Chicago River winds through a ribbon of forest preserves, giving the map a soft, irregular edge of green against the straight streets. Larger footprints stand out too: the Golf Mill shopping centre, school campuses and the commercial blocks strung along the main roads, each a broad shape among the fine residential grid.
The village is best known for the Leaning Tower of Niles, a half-size replica of the tower in Pisa built in the 1930s and set in a small park on Touhy Avenue. It barely registers on a Niles map poster, which is part of the appeal: the print shows the everyday structure of the place rather than its postcard image.
The old plank-road route runs northwest across the grid at an angle, the single line that immediately places Niles within the wider Chicago street system.
Forest preserve land follows the winding river through the village, a curving band of paths and woodland that breaks the rectangular rhythm of the surrounding blocks.
The replica tower stands beside Touhy Avenue in a compact park, a small point on the map with an outsized place in local identity and memory.

Ko e hā ʻa Niles
Niles is home to many families whose story runs through the northwest suburbs, and the map shows the streets they actually use: the drive down Milwaukee, the walk to school, the paths along the river. It is a personal kind of geography, drawn plainly.
