Ko e mape
Novovolynsk lies in Volyn oblast in northwestern Ukraine, a short distance from the Polish border. It was founded after the Second World War to serve the coal mines of the Lviv-Volyn basin, and its layout reflects that origin. Streets run in straight lines, and residential areas are arranged as planned blocks around a clear central axis.
The mines shaped both the town and its surroundings, and former and working mine sites, spoil heaps and industrial rail lines still appear around the edges of the plan. Beyond them lies the flat farmland and woodland of Volyn, broken by small rivers and villages.
A Novovolynsk map poster shows a town designed from scratch in a single era. Avenues, squares and microdistricts form a coherent, symmetrical pattern, while the mine sites add irregular shapes on the outskirts. In black and white the result is crisp and structured, a good example of mid-century Soviet planning in a small town.
The core of the town is organised along straight avenues and squares, a deliberate postwar layout that gives the map a clear symmetry.
Coal mines, spoil heaps and industrial rail spurs lie around the town, adding irregular industrial shapes to its outer edges.
Beyond the town, fields, woods and small rivers spread out toward the Polish border, framing the dense plan with open land.
