Nowogard lies in West Pomerania in northwestern Poland, between Szczecin and the Baltic coast. The town's defining feature on the map is Lake Nowogardzkie, which sits directly against the historic centre. The shoreline is the first thing the eye finds, a smooth, elongated shape of water with streets gathering along one side and fields and woods around the rest.
Known as Naugard until 1945, the town belonged to Germany before the post-war border changes, and its layout still reflects medieval origins: a central market square, a parish church and a tight block pattern close to the water. Around that core, twentieth-century housing extends outward, and main roads leave town toward the neighbouring towns of the region.
