Núi Sập is a town in An Giang province, in the western Mekong Delta. It takes its name from Sập hill, one of the small granite hills that rise unexpectedly from the otherwise flat delta. From above, the town stretches along the Thoại Hà canal, with houses and streets lining the waterway and rice fields reaching out on either side.
The canal was dug in the early nineteenth century under the mandarin Thoại Ngọc Hầu, and it still organises the landscape. Smaller channels branch off at regular intervals, dividing the land into long, narrow parcels. Nearby, around Ba Thê hill, lies the Óc Eo archaeological area, linked to the ancient Funan culture, one of the oldest known civilisations in the region.
A Núi Sập map poster shows a delta town in its clearest form: a straight canal as the main axis, a ribbon of settlement along it and a dense grid of irrigation channels all around. The hill adds a single rounded shape to the plan, and the combination of water, fields and settlement makes for an unusual, very graphic print.
A historic canal runs straight through the town, lined with houses and streets. It is the backbone of the map and of local life.
The small granite hill that gives the town its name breaks the flat delta plain, forming a compact, rounded shape beside the settlement.
Secondary canals divide the surrounding land into long, regular strips of paddy, creating a finely ruled texture across the poster.
