Obama faces Wakasa Bay on the Sea of Japan coast of Fukui Prefecture, on a narrow coastal plain enclosed by forested mountains. From above, the town fills the flat land around its harbour and the mouths of its rivers. The older streets lie near the waterfront, headlands enclose the inner bay, and valleys lead inland toward Kyoto.
For centuries the town was a gateway between the coast and the capital. Fish and other goods travelled south to Kyoto along routes known together as the Saba Kaidō, or mackerel road, and the area has an unusual number of old temples for its size. Obama is also known for Wakasa lacquerware chopsticks. In 2008 it drew international attention because it shared its name with the then US presidential candidate.
An Obama map poster shows a town defined by the meeting of mountains and sea: the shoreline and harbour, the grid of the old quarter and the rivers flowing down from the hills. It suits travellers who have walked between the temples here, people with family ties to Fukui, and admirers of Japan's quieter coastal towns.
The coastline curves around the inner bay, and the harbour and headlands form a sheltered basin that dominates the northern side of the map.
Near the waterfront, a close grid of narrow streets preserves the layout of the historic town. Its small blocks come out finely on the poster.
Valleys run inland from the coast toward the mountains, following the old routes that carried fish from Wakasa to Kyoto and giving the map its southward pull.

A map of Obama brings the sea, the old town and the mountains together in one balanced image. It makes a thoughtful keepsake of a trip along the Wakasa coast, or a reminder of a family home on the Sea of Japan.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the name of a temple or neighbourhood, and set the coordinates line. Choose from five styles, including the soft Paper and the dark Noir, as a $9 HD download or a printed poster.
