Youkaichi is an old market town in Shiga Prefecture, now part of the city of Higashiōmi. Its name refers to the markets once held on the eighth day of the month, and the town developed as a trading place on the plain east of Lake Biwa. On a map, the historic centre is a compact grid of narrow streets.
All around it the plain is laid out in rice paddies, crossed by small rivers and irrigation channels that flow west toward the lake. Rail lines and main roads cross the fields, while wooded hills rise to the east, giving the map an edge on that side.
The town is known for its giant kite festival, in which huge kites with elaborate designs are flown over the fields of the riverbed. A Youkaichi map poster shows the setting of that tradition: a small, orderly town surrounded by open farmland and water on the plain of Ōmi.
