Olkhon Island is the largest island in Lake Baikal, lying close to the lake's western shore. On a map it appears as a long, slender landmass aligned northeast to southwest, separated from the mainland by the strait known as Maloye More, the Small Sea, and by a narrow crossing at its southern end.
The island's western side is gentler, with bays, beaches and open steppe, while the eastern coast drops more steeply into the deep main body of the lake. Khuzhir, the main village, lies on the western shore near Shaman Rock, a cape held sacred in local Buryat tradition. The northern tip ends at Cape Khoboy.
An Olkhon Island map poster frames a strip of land between two very different waters: the sheltered strait on one side and the open expanse of Baikal on the other. The roads are mostly unpaved tracks, drawn as fine lines along the island's length, and the coastline shifts from soft bays to straighter, steeper edges.
The shallow strait between the island and the western mainland shore forms a narrow channel of water along one full side of the island.
The main village sits on the western coast beside the rocky cape of Shaman Rock, one of the best-known landmarks on Baikal.
The island narrows toward its northern tip, ending in a pointed cape that looks out over the open lake.

Ko e hā ʻa Olkhon Island
Olkhon is a place people cross half a continent to reach, and many remember the silence, the ice or the steppe long after leaving. A map of the island keeps that journey present in everyday life.
Personalise the title with a date or a line of your own and choose from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The long shape works well in portrait formats such as 50×70 cm or 24×36 inches.
