Ormskirk is an old market town in West Lancashire, between Liverpool and Preston. Its map is built around one point: the crossroads in the centre, marked by a clock tower, where four main streets meet. From there the older streets run out in four directions, and newer housing fills the spaces between them before the town gives way to the flat, fertile farmland of the West Lancashire plain.
The town received its market charter in the thirteenth century, and markets are still held in its streets. Its parish church of St Peter and St Paul is unusual in England for having both a tower and a spire standing side by side. On the eastern side of town, the grounds of Edge Hill University add a large campus with its own layout of paths and buildings.
