Ovalle lies inland in the Coquimbo Region, in the valley of the Limarí River. The land around it is semi-arid. From above, the town is a neat Spanish colonial grid of square blocks centred on the Plaza de Armas, and the whole grid is bounded by the river along its northern edge.
Irrigated orchards and vineyards follow the valley floor as green ribbons, while bare hills rise on both sides. Chileans often call Ovalle the Pearl of the Limarí. The surrounding valley is known for pisco, table grapes and wine, and the patchwork of fields is clearly visible around the town.
An Ovalle map poster shows the contrast between an orderly town plan and the loose, winding lines of a desert valley. Not far away, the Valle del Encanto contains well-known rock carvings and petroglyphs left by the Molle culture.
Square blocks spread out evenly from the central plaza. It is a textbook example of a colonial layout and reads especially clearly in black and white.
The river bends along the northern side of the town, lined with trees and fields. It marks a firm natural boundary on the map.
Irrigated plots run along the valley floor in narrow strips. Their geometry contrasts with the open, unbuilt hills on either side.
