Laguna del Inca
The lake fills the valley directly below the hotel and stretches toward the border peaks. On the poster it forms the largest solid shape, a still, dark body framed by steep contour lines.

Portillo sits high in the Andes just below the pass that carries the road between Santiago and Mendoza, a few kilometres from the Argentine border. From above there is very little built form: one long hotel, a handful of lodges, a scatter of lift lines, and the dark oval of the Laguna del Inca filling the valley floor. Everything else is contour, scree and snow, which gives the map an unusually spare, almost diagrammatic quality.
The approach is the part people remember. On the Chilean side the international road climbs a stack of tight switchbacks, known locally as Los Caracoles, before levelling out beside the lake. On a Portillo map poster those hairpins read as a coiled line folded against the slope, the most intricate drawing on the sheet and a sharp contrast to the empty mountain faces around it.
Portillo has a long place in skiing history. In 1966 it hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the first held in the Southern Hemisphere, and its steep couloirs have drawn serious skiers ever since. The resort has stayed deliberately small, so the map is less about development than about setting: a lake, a pass, a road and some of the highest mountains in the Americas.
The lake fills the valley directly below the hotel and stretches toward the border peaks. On the poster it forms the largest solid shape, a still, dark body framed by steep contour lines.
The international road climbs toward the resort in a tight series of hairpin bends. Rendered in black line, the switchbacks stack up like a coil, the densest detail anywhere on the map.
The Argentine frontier lies only a short distance east, along the crest of the Andes. The upper part of the sheet is almost pure terrain, with ridgelines and cirques instead of streets.

Ko e hā ʻa Portillo
A Portillo map suits anyone who has made the drive up from Santiago or skied the couloirs above the lake. It is a quiet, graphic print, mostly empty space, and it reads well in a hallway, a study or a mountain cabin where a busy city map would feel out of place.
You can set your own title and subtitle, add the date of a trip or a season, and edit the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the $9 HD files in six sizes or order a matte print, framed if you like.
