Pacasmayo lies on the northern coast of Peru, in the region of La Libertad, between the Pacific and the desert. The Jequetepeque river valley, one of the green agricultural corridors that cross this arid coast, reaches the sea nearby. The town grew as a port serving the valley, linked by rail to the interior in the nineteenth century.
Its most recognisable feature is the long pier, built in the nineteenth century, which stretches far out over the water. Pacasmayo is also known among surfers for one of the longest left-hand waves in the world. On the map, a regular grid of streets fills the coastal strip behind the beach.
A Pacasmayo map poster shows a town defined by its edge: a sharp line of coast, the thin stroke of the pier and the orderly blocks behind. The surrounding desert leaves large areas of white space, giving the composition a spare, open look.
The long nineteenth-century pier extends straight out into the Pacific, a thin, unmistakable line that is the town's signature feature on the map.
Behind the beach, a regular grid of blocks fills the flat coastal strip, the town's main area of homes and businesses.
The river valley nearby brings a belt of cultivated land to the desert coast, visible as a different texture from the empty sandy ground around it.
