Palmetto Bay is a residential village in southern Miami-Dade County, incorporated in 2002. It stretches from the US 1 corridor east to the shore of Biscayne Bay. From above, it is a quiet mix of curving suburban streets, cul-de-sacs and large lots under heavy tree cover. The broad square grid of Miami's section-line roads frames it on every side.
The bayfront is the village's most distinctive edge. Here the Deering Estate preserves a historic winter residence built for the industrialist Charles Deering, along with coastal hammock, mangroves and salt marsh that reach the water. On a Palmetto Bay map poster this protected shoreline and the green spaces along it contrast with the orderly residential blocks further inland.
Canals run east toward the bay through the residential areas, a common feature of South Florida drainage, and several parks interrupt the street pattern with open lawns and playing fields. Hurricane Andrew badly damaged the area in 1992. Much of what the map shows today reflects the rebuilding of homes, streets and tree cover in the years that followed.
The historic estate on Biscayne Bay forms a large green block on the shoreline. Its woodland, mangroves and small boat basin stand out clearly against the open water.
Major roads laid out on Miami-Dade's mile grid create a strong square framework. Inside it, quieter residential streets curve and loop in suburban patterns.
On the village's eastern side, the streets give way to mangrove shoreline and tidal wetland. This soft, irregular edge gives the map a natural boundary against Biscayne Bay.
