Pará de Minas lies in central Minas Gerais, a short drive west of Belo Horizonte, on the rolling terrain typical of the region. From above, the centre is a knot of short, angled streets on higher ground, with newer neighbourhoods spreading along ridges and into the valleys around them, following the land rather than a strict plan.
The town serves as a regional centre for the surrounding countryside, with farming and industry both playing a part in its economy. Like many towns in the state, it grew outward from an old centre, and the main roads leaving that centre became the lines along which much of the later growth took place.
