Pessac lies just southwest of central Bordeaux. It is a large suburban commune where housing estates, vineyards, a university campus and pockets of forest fit together in an irregular patchwork. From above, the Bordeaux ring road sweeps through in a broad curve, and a tram line runs out from the city centre. Beyond the tighter streets near Bordeaux, the plan opens into winding residential roads and large green blocks.
Pessac holds two quite different kinds of fame. It gives its name to the Pessac-Léognan wine appellation, and historic estates such as Château Haut-Brion and Château Pape Clément stand within the commune. It is also home to the Cité Frugès, a 1920s housing estate by Le Corbusier that forms part of his work listed by UNESCO.
