Pinarāyi is in Kannur district in northern Kerala, inland from the coastal town of Thalassery. Unlike a compact town, its map is spread out. Narrow lanes and paths wind between houses set in their own gardens, surrounded by coconut palms, and follow the contours of low laterite hills and the backwaters and streams of the area.
The village is widely known as the home of Pinarayi Vijayan, who took his name from the place and became Chief Minister of Kerala in 2016. Beyond that, it is a typical example of the dispersed, green settlement pattern of the Malabar coast, where town and countryside blend without a clear edge.
A Pinarāyi map poster reflects that pattern: a fine mesh of lanes without a single center, broken by water and open ground. In monochrome, this becomes a delicate, almost handwritten network, a very different image from the grids of North Indian towns or the dense centers of large cities.
Instead of a dense core, narrow roads and paths spread across the landscape, linking homes scattered among palms and gardens.
Streams and low, wet ground run through the area, adding irregular curves and open spaces to the map.
The village lies inland from the coastal town of Thalassery, part of the densely settled belt of northern Kerala.
