Pivdenne, known until 2016 as Yuzhne, lies on the Black Sea coast northeast of Odesa. It was founded in the late 1970s as a planned town for workers at a new port and chemical complex, and the map still reads as a single designed project rather than a place that grew over centuries.
The residential town sits on a plateau above the sea. Its streets form large, regular microdistricts of apartment blocks with open courtyards, schools and green strips between them. Beyond, the port spreads along the Sukhyi estuary with long berths and industrial sites, and it is one of the largest cargo ports in Ukraine.
A Pivdenne map poster shows two scales side by side: the neat, repeated pattern of housing blocks and the broad industrial geometry of the port along the water. The coastline and the estuary add natural curves at the edges. For people who grew up here, the layout of their microdistrict is instantly recognisable.
Large rectangular blocks of apartment buildings, courtyards and schools repeat across the town, the unmistakable plan of a Soviet town designed from scratch.
Berths, terminals and industrial sites stretch along the Sukhyi estuary, drawing long hard lines that dominate the waterfront portion of the map.
The town sits close to the open coast, where a long shoreline gives the map a natural horizon beside the planned streets and port.

Ko e hā ʻa Pivdenne
Pivdenne is a young town with a strong sense of place, and many of its residents are now scattered across Europe. A map of its streets and harbour is a quiet way to keep home on the wall.
Personalise the title, subtitle or coordinates, perhaps using the old name Yuzhne, and pick one of five styles. HD files are $9, with a free watermarked preview available before buying.
