Planadas is a municipality in the south of Tolima, Colombia, high in the Central Cordillera of the Andes. The town sits on a relatively level shelf of land, which may be what its name, a Spanish word for flat ground, refers to. All around it, the terrain drops and climbs steeply into forested valleys and ridges.
From above, the town centre is a compact grid, a small patch of ordered streets set against a sweeping mountain landscape. Beyond it, roads wind steeply through the hills, switching back to reach the rural veredas where much of the population lives and farms.
