Ponca City grew out of the Cherokee Outlet land run of 1893, and its plan still shows that sudden founding. The streets form a clear north–south grid on open prairie in north-central Oklahoma. Grand Avenue runs east–west through the downtown, and the Arkansas River curves past on the eastern side of town.
Oil brought the city its early wealth. E. W. Marland built his company here, and it later became part of Conoco. The large refinery on the south edge of the city is one of the most striking shapes on the map, a dense block of tanks and pipelines. The Marland Mansion and its grounds, built in the 1920s, remain a local landmark.
A Ponca City map poster shows the planned grid, the industrial district and the water to the east in one frame. To the northeast, the irregular shoreline of Lake Ponca stands out against the straight streets. The monochrome treatment suits a town whose outlines were drawn quickly and decisively.

The refinery on the south side is a large, intricate block of storage tanks and rail lines, a reminder of the city's role in Oklahoma oil.
Northeast of the city, Lake Ponca's branching inlets and wooded shoreline form a soft, organic shape against the prairie roads.
