Pontedera lies in the province of Pisa, in the lower Arno valley, where the Era River flows into the Arno. On a map the two rivers meet near the town, and the settlement fills the flat land between and beside them. A long main street runs through the old centre, with newer districts spreading out on either side.
The town is known for Piaggio, which has had its main plant here for decades and produced the Vespa scooter. The Museo Piaggio, housed in the former factory buildings, tells that story. The industrial area appears on the map as large, regular blocks set apart from the finer historic streets.

Piaggio works
The factory area forms large, rectangular blocks next to the town. It is where the Vespa has been made, and it gives the map a distinctly industrial accent.
