Portimão grew along the west bank of the Arade, where the river widens into an estuary before meeting the Atlantic. On the map the old centre forms a knot of short, irregular streets close to the water, while newer districts spread north and west in looser blocks. Bridges cross to the east bank, and the river itself becomes the strongest line on the sheet.
Toward the sea the town runs into Praia da Rocha, a long beach backed by ochre cliffs, with hotels and a seafront avenue following the clifftop. Breakwaters guard the mouth of the estuary, and the village of Ferragudo faces Portimão across the water. The port has long been tied to fishing, and grilled sardines on the quayside remain part of the town's identity.
A Portimão map poster captures the meeting of three shapes: the curve of the river, the fabric of the town and the scalloped edge of the coast. Praia da Rocha
A broad sweep of sand below sandstone cliffs, with the seafront avenue on the clifftop and the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina at its eastern end near the river mouth.
