Pradera lies in the Valle del Cauca, on the eastern side of the wide Cauca valley, where the flat farmland starts to rise towards the Central Cordillera. On a map the town shows as a tidy block pattern, the kind of grid found in many Colombian towns, with a central square and streets running out towards the fields.
The land around the town is mostly given over to agriculture, and sugarcane plays a large role in this part of the department.
