Pursat is the capital of Pursat Province in western Cambodia. The town is built on both banks of the Pursat River, which flows northeast toward the Tonle Sap lake, and the river's winding course runs right through the middle of the map. National Road 5, the main route between Phnom Penh and Battambang, crosses the town.
To the southwest, the land rises toward the Cardamom Mountains. To the northeast, it flattens into the rice fields and seasonal wetlands of the Tonle Sap basin. The province is known in Cambodia for marble carving, and workshops that produce stone sculptures can be found in the area.
A Pursat map poster shows a river town at its simplest: the curving waterway, the bridges linking its banks, the main road running straight through, and the grid of streets spread on either side. Beyond them, the fields and canals of the plain fill the edges of the frame.
The river winds through the centre of the town, dividing it into two parts and giving the map its main natural line.
The highway between Phnom Penh and Battambang crosses the town, forming a straight axis for the surrounding streets.
Bridges link the two banks at key points, where the main streets and the busiest parts of town come together.

Pursat is a place remembered by those who grew up on its riverbanks, and by those who have passed through on the road to Battambang. The map keeps the river and the streets in a simple, lasting form.
