Raalte lies in the Salland region of Overijssel, in the east of the Netherlands. It is a compact market town with a clear centre, from which roads run outward in several directions to surrounding villages. Beyond the built-up area, the land is flat and agricultural, divided into long fields, farmsteads and rows of trees that give the map a fine, orderly texture.
East of the town, the land rises gently towards the Sallandse Heuvelrug, a wooded ridge of low hills.
