Ranau is a district town in the interior of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, set in a valley on the eastern side of Mount Kinabalu. The altitude gives it a cooler climate than the coast, and the hills around the town are covered with farms growing vegetables, fruit and tea. From above the town centre is compact, surrounded by steep, folded terrain and roads that follow the ridges.
The main road from Kota Kinabalu reaches Ranau after climbing past Kundasang and the Kinabalu Park area, and from here routes continue toward Sandakan and the east coast. On a map these roads form long, curving lines through the hills. Rivers cut deep valleys between the ridges, and scattered settlements sit on whatever flat land is available.
The area includes Poring Hot Springs, part of Kinabalu Park, and the Sabah Tea plantation. Ranau was also the endpoint of the Sandakan Death Marches of the Second World War, commemorated at a memorial near the town. A Ranau map poster frames the town close in, with the shape of the valley and the approaches to Kinabalu visible around it.

The town gathers on the flatter ground of the valley floor, a compact cluster of streets surrounded by steep, folded terrain on every side.
To the west, the slopes rise toward Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Malaysia, adding a sense of altitude to a wider frame.

Ko e hā ʻa Ranau
People remember Ranau: climbers on their way to Kinabalu, families with farms on the slopes, visitors who came for the hot springs. A map of the town holds that memory quietly, without needing a photograph.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the date of a climb or a family name, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Digital files cost $9, and printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
