Raposa lies on the north-eastern tip of the island of São Luís in Maranhão, facing the Atlantic. It is one of the most water-shaped places on the Brazilian coast. The tides here are large, and on a map the coastline dissolves into mangroves, sandbanks, dunes and a maze of tidal channels. The town sits on the land between them, oriented towards the sea.
Raposa has long been a fishing town, with many of its founding families coming from Ceará. It is also known for its bobbin lace, a craft associated with the town. Boats leave from the waterfront to fishing grounds and to beaches and dunes along the coast, some of which are reached only at certain tides.
A Raposa map poster captures a town caught between land and water: a compact street pattern, the irregular shoreline and the branching channels of the mangrove. It is an unusual coastal image with a great deal of natural detail.
Narrow waterways branch through the mangroves around the town, forming a detailed, organic pattern that fills much of the map.
The town faces the water, with streets leading down towards the shore where fishing boats are moored between the tides.
Along the coast, sandbanks and dunes create soft, shifting shapes between the open sea and the mangrove edge.
