Redenção is a relatively young town in the southeast of Pará, in a region opened up by road building and settlement on the southern edge of Brazilian Amazonia. From above, its streets form a broad, regular grid of long blocks. This kind of planned layout is common in towns that grew quickly around a main road in recent decades.
The highway corridor is still the spine of the town, lined with shops, warehouses and services for the surrounding ranches. Beyond the grid, the land opens into large rectangles of pasture, broken by strips of remaining forest and small streams. The name means redemption in Portuguese. Like many places in this part of Pará, the town depends on cattle and agriculture, and its growth has followed the roads. The main road runs through town as a clear axis. Commercial buildings cluster along it, and it connects Redenção with other towns across southeastern Pará.
