Rockingham sits on the Indian Ocean coast south of Perth, where Cockburn Sound meets the open sea. On a map the city is defined by its shoreline. The coast curves around the sound and toward the Shoalwater area, and Garden Island stretches north across the water, sheltering the bay.
The street pattern is typical of planned Australian coastal suburbs. Curving residential streets are arranged in neighbourhood cells, with large parks and reserves between them.
