Roslavl’ lies in the south of Smolensk Oblast, on the Ostyor River, in gently rolling country of fields and woodland. From above, the town looks like a broad network of streets on both sides of the valley, with the older centre on higher ground and quieter residential blocks spreading outward. Roslavl’ is one of the oldest towns in the region. Chronicles date its founding to the twelfth century and link it to Prince Rostislav of Smolensk.
