Rugby is a market town in Warwickshire, in the English Midlands. On a map, the compact historic centre sits on a gentle rise, with roads spreading from it in every direction. The upper River Avon runs past the northern edge of the town, and the Oxford Canal winds around it in wide, looping curves.
The town gave its name to rugby football, which, according to tradition, began at Rugby School in the early nineteenth century. The school's buildings and playing fields are still close to the town centre. Rugby also grew as a railway junction, and the West Coast Main Line still passes through the town.

Railway lines
Rugby grew as a railway junction, and the tracks cross the town in long straight lines. The West Coast Main Line still runs through it.
