Ko e mape
Rusape lies in Manicaland province in eastern Zimbabwe, on the main road between Harare and Mutare. It is the administrative centre of Makoni district and grew as a service town for the surrounding farming area. From above, the town has a clear structure: a small commercial centre near the highway and railway, residential suburbs on either side, and rocky hills and farmland beyond.
Rusape Dam, a reservoir on the Rusape river a short distance from town, is used for water supply and recreation, and its irregular shoreline is the most distinctive shape in the wider area. The surrounding highveld is cooler than Zimbabwe's lowlands, and the road east continues towards Mutare and the mountains of the Eastern Highlands.
A Rusape map poster shows a town organised along lines of movement. The highway and rail line run through it as parallel strokes, suburbs fill in on either side with both curving and gridded streets, and the reservoir sits nearby as a large, pale form. It is a composed, readable image of a crossroads town on one of the country's main routes.
The Harare–Mutare road and the railway pass through Rusape side by side, two strong lines that organise the town's commercial centre and suburbs.
The reservoir's branching shoreline, following the valleys it flooded, forms the largest and most organic shape on the map around the town.
Residential areas spread on both sides of the main road, combining regular grids with curving streets that follow the gentle rise of the land.
