Salatiga lies in the highlands of Central Java, on the lower slopes of Mount Merbabu, roughly halfway between Semarang and Surakarta. Its elevation gives it a cooler climate than the coastal plain, which made it a favoured place for Dutch residents in the colonial era. The main road between the two larger cities runs straight through the town.
On a map Salatiga is compact and surrounded by farmland and villages. The streets follow the gently rising ground, and older, more regular blocks near the centre give way to looser patterns at the edges.
