Pati lies on the lowlands of northern Central Java, between Kudus and the coast at Juwana. The land around is flat and heavily farmed, and the town appears on the map as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by rice fields and villages, with main roads running out toward neighbouring towns.
At its centre is the alun-alun, the square found at the heart of most Javanese regency towns, with government buildings and a mosque nearby. The streets around it form a fairly regular pattern, loosening into narrower lanes and village clusters toward the outskirts.
To the northwest rises the volcanic massif of Mount Muria, and the limestone Kendeng hills lie to the south. A Pati map poster shows a classic Javanese town plan, a square at its heart and roads reaching out across the plain.
The central square forms an open rectangle at the heart of the town, with the main administrative and religious buildings grouped around it.
Main roads run out from the centre toward Kudus, Juwana and other towns, forming the town's basic structure.
Beyond the centre, the town gives way to rice fields and village clusters, which appear as looser, scattered patterns on the map.
