Madiun lies in the valley of East Java, between Mount Lawu to the west and Mount Wilis to the east. The land here is flat and fertile, and from above the city is compact and orderly. A regular street pattern surrounds the central square, and rice fields press close to its edges.
The Madiun River, a tributary of the Bengawan Solo, runs along the west of the city. The railway is also central to Madiun's identity. The main Java line passes through, and the city is home to PT INKA, Indonesia's state-owned rolling stock manufacturer, whose works appear on the map as a large rectangular site near the tracks.
A Madiun map poster shows the city's neat street plan, its river and rail lines, and the fields beyond. Madiun is also known across Indonesia for pecel, a dish of vegetables with peanut sauce that carries the city's name.
The alun-alun forms the traditional heart of the city, with the main streets and civic buildings organised around it.
The main Java railway cuts through the city, and the large rolling stock works sit beside the tracks as a distinctive block.
The river winds along the western side of town toward the Bengawan Solo, forming a soft curve against the street grid.
