San Luis lies in the province of Pampanga, on the low, fertile plain of Central Luzon. From above, the town centre is a small cluster of streets. The surrounding barangays spread along roads and waterways, and much of the land beyond is rice paddy and fishpond.
Water shapes the map. The Pampanga River and its channels wind through the area, and the rectangular fishponds form a patchwork of flat shapes across the lowlands. During the rainy season much of this plain floods, and the settlement pattern follows the higher ground and the river banks.
San Luis is known as the hometown of Luis Taruc, the leader of the Hukbalahap movement. A San Luis map poster shows the town within its watery landscape, with river channels, ponds and fields all drawn in fine black line.
The river and its branches curve through the municipality, forming the main natural structure of the map.
Rectangular fishponds cover large parts of the lowland, creating a distinctive grid of water shapes around the town.
The poblacion forms a compact knot of streets, with roads stretching out along the higher ground to the barangays.
