Sanawad lies in Khargone district in western Madhya Pradesh, in the Nimar region on the northern side of the Narmada valley. On the map, the town is a dense cluster of streets around its market area, crossed by a railway line and a few main roads. Beyond them, fields spread across the flat, cultivated plain.
The town is an agricultural trading centre, especially for cotton, which is widely grown in Nimar. It is also a common approach point for Omkareshwar, the temple island on the Narmada that is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India. Many pilgrims pass through Sanawad on their way there.
A Sanawad map poster shows a working market town: a tight core of streets, the straight railway line, the roads leading out to villages and the open farmland around it. It is a compact drawing with a clear centre.
The oldest streets form a dense, irregular cluster around the trading area. On the map it appears as a dark, compact centre.
A railway line crosses the town and is used by many pilgrims travelling toward Omkareshwar. Its straight course adds a strong line to the composition.
Flat fields surround the town on all sides, with the Narmada valley to the south. They give the map a calm, open border.
