São Benedito lies on the Serra da Ibiapaba, the long plateau along the western border of Ceará with Piauí. Its height gives it a milder, greener climate than the sertão below. From above, the town is a compact grid on fairly level upland, with farm roads running out across the plateau in straight lines.
The area is known for horticulture, and São Benedito in particular is associated with flower growing, which suits the cooler temperatures of the serra. To the east the Ibiapaba ends in a steep escarpment that drops sharply toward the lowlands, one of the most distinctive landforms in the Brazilian north-east.
