São Domingos do Capim lies in northeastern Pará, on the banks of the Capim River not far from where it joins the Guamá. The region is low, green and threaded with waterways, and on a map the town is a compact cluster of streets on the riverbank, with the broad, looping river dominating the composition and forest and farmland extending away on every side.
The town is known throughout Brazil for the pororoca, a tidal bore that forms when strong incoming tides push up the river against its current. The wave can travel upstream for long distances, and surfers come to ride it, especially during the surfing event held here in the season of the strongest tides. It is one of the most unusual natural spectacles in the Amazon region.
Life in the municipality depends heavily on the river, which serves as a route for boats and a source of fish. A São Domingos do Capim map poster brings together the settled bank and the wide water beside it, a composition in which the river is not background but the main subject.
A wide, winding channel sweeps past the town, far larger on the map than the streets beside it and shaping every direction in which the settlement can grow.
The stretch of river where the tidal bore runs upstream is the town's claim to fame, drawing surfers and spectators to watch the wave pass the banks.
Streets run back from the waterfront in a compact pattern, the town's edge defined by the riverbank and the landings used by local boats.

Surfers who have ridden the pororoca and families from this corner of Pará both have reasons to keep this map. It records a small town whose relationship with its river is unlike almost anywhere else in the world.
