Sardārshahr lies in the Churu district of northern Rajasthan, on the sandy plains of the Thar Desert. From above, the town appears as a compact core of narrow, winding lanes, with markets and old houses close together, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods and roads leading out across a flat landscape of dunes and farmland.
The town was founded in the nineteenth century under the rulers of Bikaner and grew as a trading centre, home to merchant families of the Shekhawati region and surrounding areas. Like many towns in this part of Rajasthan, it is known for its havelis, the large mansions built by merchants, some decorated with painted facades.
