Saugor, officially Sagar, is a city in Madhya Pradesh on the Vindhya plateau of central India. Its most striking feature from above is the lake at its heart, a broad body of water around which the older town grew, and the city's name is usually linked to it. Streets press close along the banks, and the rest of the city spreads across the rolling ground beyond, with hills rising at the edges.
The city is known for Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, founded in 1946 and one of the oldest universities in Madhya Pradesh. Its campus sits on hills outside the centre. Saugor also has a long-established cantonment, laid out in a more orderly pattern of wide roads and open grounds, which forms a distinct zone on the map.
