Murwāra is the urban centre of Katni district in Madhya Pradesh, and most people simply call the town Katni. The railway shapes its map more than anything else. Katni is one of the important junctions of central India, where lines from several directions meet. Its yards, sidings and curving tracks form a dense network at the heart of the town.
The Katni River runs past the town, and its meanders and banks give the plan a natural edge against the straight lines of the railway.
