Semiluki sits on the Don River a short distance west of Voronezh, in the forest-steppe of southern Russia. The river is the defining feature of its map: a broad, looping line with floodplain, side channels and oxbows on one side and the town on the other, its streets laid out in blocks between the water and the higher ground.

It is known for its refractory works, which has produced heat-resistant materials for decades, and its position close to Voronezh placed it within the city's wider orbit.
