Seosan lies in the northwest of South Chungcheong Province, close to the Yellow Sea and next to the Taean Peninsula. The city centre occupies a basin among low hills, and on the map it appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by green slopes and farmland. Roads fan out toward Dangjin, Taean and Hongseong, and toward the coast.
The area is known for Haemieupseong, a well-preserved walled town from the Joseon period, and for the Seosan Maae Samjon Buddha, a triad carved into a cliff face and famous for its gentle smiles. To the south, large parts of Cheonsu Bay were reclaimed in the late twentieth century to create broad rice fields, giving the coastal landscape a strikingly regular pattern.
