Serra Talhada is in the dry interior of Pernambuco, the sertão of northeastern Brazil. Its name means "cut mountain" and refers to the steep, sheared ridge that stands above the town. On a map the city spreads across the lower ground of the Pajeú river valley, with a compact centre and newer districts reaching outward along the main roads.
The Pajeú is a seasonal river that runs full in the rains and thin in the long dry months. Its course is still an important line through the landscape. A Serra Talhada map poster shows the town's tight central grid, the looser streets at its edges, and the open, sparsely built country that surrounds it on every side.
The city is known as the birthplace of Virgulino Ferreira da Silva, better known as Lampião, the most famous leader of the cangaço bandits who roamed the northeastern backlands in the early twentieth century. Today Serra Talhada is a regional centre for the Pajeú area. Highways cross the city, linking it to other towns across the semi-arid interior.
The steep, sheared hill that gives the city its name rises close to town. On the map it appears as empty ground where the streets stop short.
The seasonal river runs through the region, and the city occupies the flatter ground of its valley, set against wide semi-arid country.
The older core is a dense cluster of blocks around the main squares. It loosens into wider, more open streets toward the edges.

Ko e hā ʻa Serra Talhada
For people from the sertão, or anyone drawn to the history of the cangaço, Serra Talhada holds special meaning. Its clear town plan set against open land makes an understated but memorable poster.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a name, a year or a line of your own, and keep or edit the coordinates. Sand suits the dry landscape, and Classic black & white keeps the street pattern sharp.
