Shancheng is the main town of Shan County, in the far southwest of Shandong Province near the borders with Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu. It sits on the North China Plain, where the land is almost perfectly flat and the countryside is divided into long fields and straight roads. On a map the town forms a neat, compact block of streets in the middle of that agricultural pattern.
Like many county towns in this part of China, Shancheng has expanded rapidly, with wide new avenues, residential compounds and public squares added around an older centre.
