Silvan lies in the eastern part of Diyarbakır Province in southeastern Turkey, on rolling ground between the Tigris basin and the mountains to the north. The town is widely identified with medieval Mayyafariqin, which served as a capital of the Marwanid dynasty, and parts of its old walls survive. On a map, the older core stands out as a tighter, more irregular tangle of streets.
Around that core, newer districts spread in looser blocks, and roads leave the town toward surrounding villages and farmland. Within the wider district, the Malabadi Bridge crosses the Batman River with a single, very large stone arch built in the twelfth century, one of the best-known historic bridges in the region.

This twelfth-century bridge in the district crosses the Batman River with one broad stone arch and is among the most admired medieval bridges in Anatolia.
