Sirsi sits on the plateau of the Western Ghats in Uttara Kannada, one of the most heavily forested districts of Karnataka. On the map the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by green: areca and spice plantations, patches of forest and small villages linked by narrow roads that wind through the hills.
The town has long been a trading centre for the crops of the surrounding hills, especially areca nut and spices.
