Soccavo is a quarter of western Naples, lying in a basin between Fuorigrotta and Pianura at the foot of the Camaldoli hill, the highest point in the city. The area sits on the edge of the Phlegraean Fields, the volcanic zone west of Naples, and the terrain rises steeply to the north.
Once an agricultural village outside the city, Soccavo was transformed in the twentieth century into a largely residential district. On the map, its streets form a dense pattern of apartment blocks and roads, with larger housing estates, including Rione Traiano, appearing as distinct geometric shapes within the surrounding fabric.
