Songlou is a town in the far northwest of Jiangsu province, in the Xuzhou area near the border with Shandong. It stands on the North China Plain, where the land is almost completely flat and every road and field boundary tends to run straight. From above, the town appears as a compact block of streets set in wide agricultural country.
The core of the town is arranged along a few main roads, with shops and housing close to them. Newer residential blocks and workshops fill in the gaps. Beyond this the pattern changes to farmland: long rectangular plots and irrigation channels, with small villages scattered at regular distances like points on a grid.
