Sosnowiec lies in the eastern part of the Upper Silesian metropolitan area, and from above it forms part of an almost unbroken urban landscape with Katowice and its neighbours. The Czarna Przemsza and Brynica rivers trace its western and southern edges, winding lines that once marked a political border and still shape the map.
Within the city, a dense centre with regular streets gives way to separate districts that grew around mines and factories, each with its own cluster of housing. Railways and expressways cut through the fabric, and parks and former industrial land leave open spaces between neighbourhoods.
